Artist Statement:

Brick, concrete, granite, steel, glass, and wood are the materials that furnish structure and texture in the urban environment. In my photographs made from and in the street, as a pedestrian observer, I document and explore the relationship between human beings and the surrounding cityscape. Walking for blocks, often miles, I search for the dynamic interplay of buildings and light, expressive colors, compelling geometry, and the candid, unpredictable human presence. I'm particularly interested in the tensions that urban areas present – such as community versus isolation, randomness versus order, and transience versus permanence. Frequently, I interpret these dualities in my images by utilizing sharp natural light and deep shadows as prominent visual counterpoints, creating abstractions from the human-made forms which loom over us.  The results of my work are graphically direct, yet leave space for the viewer to connect via their own urban experiences.
