Artist Statement:
Following the pandemic and the birth of my son in 2021, I returned to photographing the natural environment by necessity. Lockdown and relocation had disrupted my urban photography, and by the time life began to return somewhat to normal, I was knee-deep in fatherhood. Understandably, opportunities for image-making became much fewer, and decidedly I added to my preceding body of regional New England landscapes by focusing on locales closer to home. Concerned that these newer limitations would result in a less cohesive body of work, I discovered the opposite became true. Exploring the balance of light and darkness in these images is a unifying visual theme (also prevalent in my urban work) and a metaphor for the peaks and lows experienced in my personal growth as a parent. With my feet on the soil and a camera in my hand, I use landscape photography to ground myself amidst life's demands. These photographs represent my inner journey, reflecting at me through the grandeur of the Earth and my place here on it. They portray a sense of determination, hope, resiliency, transformation, wonder, and the unknown.
